What type of brake should be used on a caster?
Share
The type of brake used depends on the application. In the series of casters we use, there are several types:
LIGHT DUTY APPLICATIONS (UP TO 250 LB EACH)

This type of brake is suitable for applications with light loads that are not moved often.
LIGHT MEDIUM DUTY APPLICATIONS (UP TO 500 LB EACH)

This is the most common brake in the industry. The top lock brake works by applying pressure from the top metal tab down onto the wheel, allowing the caster to maintain swivel mobility.
MEDIUM-DUTY APPLICATIONS (UP TO 1,500 LB EACH)

The total lock mechanism activates the wheel brake and secures the swivel head, completely preventing caster movement. This ensures a more stable foundation for equipment, carts, and tables.
HEAVY-DUTY APPLICATIONS (UP TO 5,500 LB EACH)

When regular total lock brakes just aren't cutting it, these heavy-duty total lock casters are the ideal solution. Compared to a total lock brake, they offer even greater wheel contact when applying pressure.
